CALPEX PUR-KING DUO low-temperature pipe system for district heating networks

CALPEX PUR-KING sets a new global benchmark for energy savings. Thanks to high-quality manufacturing and innovative polyurethane (PUR) insulation, it achieves a thermal conductivity of just λ 0.0199 W/m*K – measured at an average temperature of 50°C. This lambda value is unique on the global market; no other pipe system in this substance class achieves a comparable measured value in terms of energy efficiency. In addition to this clear USP, the patented CALPEX PUR-KING DUO system also offers other advantages, making it ideal as a local or district heating pipe for your heating system.

For example, this low-temperature pipe system is flexible, continuous and self-compensating. The flexible pipes enable tight bending radii during installation, facilitating installation in narrow trenches – properties that are particularly advantageous when connecting the CALPEX system. In addition, thanks to the extended delivery lengths (continuous installation), fewer connection joints are required – we can supply longer or shorter lengths on drums on request. Lastly, the force-fit bond between the carrier pipe, insulation and outer casing is self-compensating. Typically, compensators or expansion joints are integrated into the system to prevent stresses and damage due to thermal expansion. However, these components are not necessary with the flexible CALPEX PUR-KING pipe system – this self-regulating system reliably compensates for thermally induced length changes. Once in use, the high-quality CALPEX pipes promise a low-maintenance supply of heat and a long service life, thanks to their excellent corrosion resistance.

Technical details for DN 25, DN 32 and DN 65

We produce this high-performance polyurethane composite system in accordance with the current EN 15632-1/-2 standards. Like our single-pipe variant, the inner pipes of the CALPEX PUR-KING DUO are made from cross-linked polyethylene (PE-Xa), a highly durable material. This makes the pipes capable of withstanding operating pressures of up to PN 6 and temperatures of up to 95°C (intermittent). Even under higher-than-average operating temperatures, these underground pipes will reliably deliver heat to their destination for decades. Our double-pipe system is available in diameters from DN 20 to DN 65, covering not only the DN 25 and DN 32 sizes but also much larger dimensions. Additionally, we can produce other dimensions and custom sizes on request.

Thanks to our unique foam technology (flexible polyurethane rigid foam), the energy efficiency of this pre-insulated pipe system is significantly enhanced. Our patented insulation material is entirely free of harmful substances, ensuring that no environmentally damaging emissions are generated during manufacturing. We integrate the rigid foam with the pipe component as a composite system, which encloses the PE-Xa pipes in an airtight manner. A thicker PE film lies between the corrugated outer casing made of LLD-PE (linear low-density polyethylene) and the composite insulation.

The consistent high quality and stable thermal performance of the patented insulation are confirmed through regular measurements by an accredited testing institute.

Why choose the DUO variant?

We manufacture the CALPEX PUR-KING system in two variants: one with a single carrier pipe and one with two carrier pipes, labelled as UNO and DUO respectively. Wondering which option is best for your construction project? There are several reasons why installing CALPEX PUR-KING DUO pipes might be advantageous.

In most cases, the DUO variant, with its two carrier pipes, serves as both the supply and return within a pipe system. This saves space, costs and labour. By laying just one pipeline, you can quickly and easily install the entire pipe system. In this case, high-quality insulation is paramount. Thanks to the high-quality CALPEX composite insulation, the cold water in the return line has no impact whatsoever on the valuable heat energy in the supply line. If the return line is already served by another system or route, the expandability of double-pipe systems also offers a significant advantage by allowing any future supply needs to be easily met using the existing system. In other words, no additional components would be required, reducing both material and installation costs. It’s important to think long-term and consider any future requirements when choosing your pipe system. We’ll be happy to provide tailored, no-obligation advice for your project.

An overview of the CALPEX systems

The CALPEX PUR-KING DUO product is part of the larger CALPEX family by BRUGG Pipes. CALPEX is the registered name of our flexible low-temperature pipe systems, designed for both heating and sanitary applications. In the sanitary sector, we offer the related CALPEX SANITARY solution for both drinking water and service water supply, reliably transporting hot water and handling wastewater disposal.

This sanitary pipe system (CALPEX SANITARY) mirror all the core properties of CALPEX PUR-KING (flexible, continuous, self-compensating). Except for the PUR insulation, they also share a similar design and a range of available accessories. We offer CALPEX SANITARY with one, two or four carrier pipes (UNO, DUO, QUADRIGA). Compared to district heating pipes, these sanitary pipe system can withstand operating pressures of up to 10 bar. The maximum operating temperature for all CALPEX systems is 95°C.

Finally, our range of CALPEX heating pipe systems also includes CALPEX PUR-KING ALU UNO and CALPEX PUR-KING ALU DUO. The carrier pipes in these ALU pipe systems, whether single or double, are made from PEXc, a special aluminium composite, instead of PEXa. This material allows the systems to withstand pressures of up to 10 bar, making them ideal for connecting buildings to local or district heating networks.

Applications – more than just a heating pipe

This pre-insulated pipe system has proven itself in various low-temperature applications. Above all, however, CALPEX PUR-KING is renowned for its excellent performance in heating systems. Whether for large-scale expansions or partial extensions of small to medium-sized local and district heating networks, our certified installation companies or in-house teams ensure that the pipe system is expertly installed. Why choose CALPEX PUR-KING DUO? In short, its specific properties (see above) allow heating networks to be established quickly and reliably, providing local consumers with consistent, energy-efficient heating for many decades.

Thanks to our innovative accessories, underground installation can be carried out effortlessly – even in the most challenging environments. Our corrosion-resistant pipes are protected against mechanical impact and moisture by an LLD-PE protective casing, making them ideal for long-term use underground.

District heating: requirements for district heating pipes

District heating provides an efficient and often eco-friendly way to supply heat energy to buildings and industrial facilities. District heating pipes transport heat over increasingly larger distances, necessitating a reliable and efficient supply infrastructure. Our solutions meet these needs. Here’s a concise summary of the specific requirements, in reference to the above-mentioned features of CALPEX PUR-KING.

Thermal insulation: The pipes should include high-quality insulation to minimise heat loss.

Resistance to high temperatures and pressures: Pipes and connections must withstand high temperatures and continuous operating pressures, depending on the specific conditions of the system.

Corrosion resistance: Since the transported water is often chemically treated, the pipes must be internally corrosion-resistant. High-quality materials are essential for a long service life and low-maintenance operation. Long-lasting external corrosion protection is also crucial, especially in aggressive soil conditions.

Durability: And a long service life justifies the investment costs and determines the solution’s economic viability over many years of operation.

Flexibility: Ideally, the pipes should be flexible so they can adapt to the prevailing topographical conditions, reducing the need for joints and bends in the pipeline.

Ease of maintenance: Maintenance work and routine inspections should be as straightforward as possible.

Regulations and standards: District heating pipes must comply with current safety and environmental regulations, such as DIN 4726 or EN 253.

Accessories

Since flexible pipes aren’t the only way to simplify installation, we also continuously invest in optimising and expanding our range of accessories. Our innovative fittings reduce the installation effort thanks to simple connection technology that ensures smooth installation at the building or in the trench. For example, house connections are easily made using our 90°-shaped entry bends. Our end caps or shrink-on end caps made of molecularly cross-linked and modified polyolefin reliably seal the ends of double-pipe systems at house entries.

And we offer a wide range of leak-tight screw, press and weldable fittings for secure underground connections. Our CALPEX clip shells also make trench routing highly flexible, allowing for branch connections with minimal entry angles. Furthermore, tight bending radii provide additional flexibility during the planning phase. This means CALPEX PUR-KING can be seamlessly adapted to the local routing conditions – the underground pipes can be individually shaped without significant effort.

How are district heating pipes installed?

How are district heating pipes installed?

Whenever a district heating network needs to be developed or expanded, meticulous and detailed planning is essential – and we’re here to support you during this process. If required, we can handle the calculations for the routes and trenches into which the pipes will be laid. Based on the local conditions (topography, soil characteristics, etc.), we determine the exact positions of the connection points. Next, we help you choose the optimal pipe system: which product best meets the routing requirements and project specifications?

For trench work and the actual installation, a contracted company or our professional BRUGG Pipes installation team carry out the installation based on the planning designs and predefined dimensions. Once preparations at the construction site are complete, the pipes are welded or otherwise connected at the joints using the appropriate tools to create a secure, leak-tight pipeline. After laying the pipes, a thorough inspection is conducted to ensure the installation has been performed correctly and meets the required standards. Once all inspections are completed and the installation is successful, the district heating system can be put into operation. From this point, heat will flow continuously through the pipes to the consumer.

Laying district heating pipes requires expertise, experience and careful planning to ensure the system operates efficiently and reliably. This represents a crucial step towards sustainable, environmentally friendly heating for communities, private households, commercial enterprises and industries.

Naturally, our product range also includes pipes specifically designed for heat pumps and other heating systems. More information can be found on the respective product pages.
